A theatre group is trying desperately to put on a play in spite of maddening interference from the haughty authoress who keeps revising the script. Act I is a rehearsal of the dreadful show; Act II is a near-disastrous dress rehearsal and Act III is the actual performance. You can be sure that whatever can go wrong, will and that there will be a madcap surprise near the end.

Performance dates: April 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26,
April 30, May 1 & 2, 2009

Carousel

Directed by Hal Friedman April 18 – May 9

This classic musical takes place in a Maine coastal village toward the end ofthe 19th century, the swaggering, carefree carnival barker, Billy Bigelow, captivates and marries the naive mill worker, Julie Jordan.  Billy loses his job just as he learns that Julie is pregnant and, desperately intent upon providing a decent life for his family, he is coerced into being and accomplice to a robbery.

Caught in the act and facing the certainty of prison, he takes his own life but Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day, while fifteen years have passed, he now encounters the teenage daughter he never knew.  She is a lonelyfriendless child.  Billy must repair in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity in a dramatic testimony to the power of love.  It’s easy to understand why, of all the shows they created, this was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s personal favorite.
